The most important aspect of being training in spiritual principles is to understand the importance of principled behaviour. Generally what happens is that man’s character is moulded by his emotions — anger, revenge, jealousy, hatred, rivalry, etc. The result is that his personality is shaped by negative feelings. What man ought to do is to become disciplined in such matters. He should not build his character under the influence of external incentives, but by his own decisions he should establish it on the basis of higher spiritual principles – the principles of life. When one trains oneself based on the principles of life, he is able to develop a positive personality.

In the present world the root cause of most of our problems is traceable to our deviation from the principles of life as exemplified in the world of nature—the best model for us to follow. All the dilemmas we are facing today arise because we have not followed nature’s lead. The stars and planets are in continual motion in their orbits, but they never collide with one another. This serves to show man how to proceed to his destination in life without coming into conflict with others. The sun too is an excellent model. It shows us how we should give life to others in a totally undiscriminating way. The tree is also a shining example to man, in that it supplies healthy and beneficial oxygen in exchange for harmful gas, that is, carbon dioxide. And just observe how flowers spread their fragrance all around them, regardless of whether they are appreciated for it or not. A flowing stream is likewise a model when it irrigates the fields without expecting anything in return. Without the inculcation of these altruistic values among human beings, no meaningful and successful life is possible. In this world, positive principled living is not of relevance solely to moral behaviour. Rather, it is incumbent upon us to follow a positive principled course at all times and in all situations.

In the science of life, one of the basic principles of life is, “Every hardship comes with ease”. Failure in life is a common occurrence. But if failure is coupled with a positive attitude, it can be transformed into success. Failure, on the other hand, coupled with a negative attitude is again failure. In fact there is no end to the possibilities of success in life for the individual who can take a lesson from failure. If life’s tribulations are faced with patience, perseverance and compassion, it will lead to the development of a positive personality as well as the achievement of success.

Another principle of life is, “Ignore the problems and avail the opportunities”. Machines, clocks and watches generally run on a system of cogwheels. The movement of one such wheel sets another in motion. If either of the wheels does not mesh with the other, neither will the cogwheel move, nor will the machine be set in motion. The same applies to human plans in the modern world. There are two “cog-wheels” here as well. And life’s system functions properly only when the two engage and work together in unison. One wheel in this world is that of man, while the other is that of concomitant circumstances. Here, the individual can be effective only to the extent that external circumstances will permit. Given this state of affairs, wisdom lies in his knowing what is possible and what is not possible for him in terms of his circumstances. This means that where interests are in conflict, the actual point at issue is not what should be the settlement from the point of view of justice; the actual solution to be sought in such a situation, is that which is possible in practical terms. That is why, in such instances, one should be willing to accept the possible, instead of engaging in futile hostilities over the issue of problems of the ideal such as justice, rights, etc. Such efforts will lead to nothing but further loss.

According to the principles of life, the degree of success achieved by the individual is in direct proportion to the effective interlocking of “cog-wheel,” within a broad framework of non-adherence to rigid ideologies. The right way to proceed in this world is to allow things to take their natural course without placing any obstacles in their path. If anyone faces problems while undertaking any task, he should work towards its implementation along peaceful lines, remaining strictly within the sphere of persuasion. He should wait also for the appropriate moment when people’s thinking has changed, so that his plan may be carried into effect, in consonance with the law of nature itself. In that way, its outcome will be beneficial to all.
